PIQNIC’s guide for business success & efficiency in the post-COVID age

Monday 11 May 2020 | removing distractions, remote workers, build productivity, digital workplace

thisway-old-way

We’ve all been bombarded with boring, obvious blog pieces on how to work from home. But despite a well-meaning approach this content has failed to push anyone to think critically about the bigger problems and opportunities facing them and their business.

There is an evident link between a business’ digital efficiency, functionality and its overall success.

The past two years have shown that businesses are largely falling short in terms of providing their employees with the digital tools they need to succeed in a remote working environment. And this is resulting in lots of activity but little action.

We’re hearing that:

  • Information is just as hard to find as ever.
  • Reliance on multiple apps is creating a mess.
  • No one can track anything.
  • Visibility is at a minimum.
  • No one knows what anyone else is busy with.

Yes, there’s lots of activity, such as suffering through numerous Zoom meetings, emails,  text messages and other online communication tools, just to know what’s going on. If we’re honest these are just old ways of working in disguise and it doesn’t need to be this way.

The bright side is we all have two years of digital working data which provides us with:

  • An understanding of where our businesses are succeeding and failing in this space; and
  • An appreciation for the benefits remote working brings employees and businesses.

What this offers is the opportunity to both define the future for our businesses and to gain an advantage over competitors simply by being forward-thinking and providing real diversified working options. This futureproofs our business, retains employees and removes stress for everyone. So why waste this opportunity attempting to create a facsimile of the old ways of working instead of creating:

  • Outcome, action-focused, engaged, happy employees.
  • Collaborative, digital functions that enable people to access information and share ideas in one place.
  • New processes and workflows that will stand the test of time.
  • Better document security and information governance.

Our Critical Thinking Guide for Businesses

Step 1 Hire reliable, motivated people who are outcome-focused.

Step 2 Ensure your digital tools and functionality enable your remote employees to be at their best and get things done by providing a single space where people, tasks, workflow and information can come together.

Step 3 Leave them alone to get on with their work (if step 1 and 2 has been done right there’s little need for Zoom meeting and endless email and text chains).

Step 4 Think critically about the opportunity you have to define the digital strategy and house rules for you and your business.
